Sweater & Scarf Sample Process — From Design to Production

Every knitwear order — OEM or private label — goes through a sampling stage before bulk production. Here’s what that process typically looks like.

1. Design or Tech Pack Review

The manufacturer reviews the buyer’s tech pack (or, for private label, works with the buyer to develop one) covering yarn, gauge, colorway, and sizing.

2. Proto Sample

A first “proto” sample is knit to validate fit, knit structure, and overall look. This stage is about construction, not final color or finishing.

3. Fit and Revision

The buyer reviews the proto sample and requests any fit or structural adjustments. A revised sample is produced if needed.

4. Production (Salesman) Sample

Once fit is approved, a production-accurate sample is made in the final yarn, color, and finishing — this is the sample used to confirm the order before bulk manufacturing begins.

5. Bulk Production

After the production sample is signed off, the order moves to bulk knitting, linking, finishing, and quality control.

Typical Timeline

Sampling typically takes 1-3 weeks depending on design complexity and yarn availability, run in parallel with MOQ and pricing confirmation.
